Independent legal advice

Practical advice for individuals, businesses and organisations.
Get in touchNelson James Law is a small independent practice, founded by Nelson after more than a decade working as a government and regulatory lawyer.
During that time, Nelson led major regulatory investigations, managed judicial review proceedings, and advised on legislation, commercial matters and emerging areas of regulation. He has particular experience in financial services and emerging technology.
That work also involved getting into the detail of disputes and difficult problems. It gave him a practical understanding of how decisions are made, how evidence and risk are weighed, and how to put a position forward clearly.
For individuals, that means straightforward advice, a clear explanation of the options, and help dealing with difficult legal problems without unnecessary complexity.
For businesses and organisations, it means advice that takes account of commercial realities, regulation and risk, whether the issue is a contract, a dispute, a new venture, a regulatory question or a difficult decision about what to do next.
The aim is simple: thoughtful legal work, clear communication and advice that makes a difference to you.
Legal work can get expensive quickly.
The fee should stay proportionate to the problem. I’ll tell you what I think the work will cost where I fairly can, what could change that, and whether there is a simpler or cheaper way forward.
Sometimes the other side drives the cost up. If their conduct creates unnecessary work, I’ll tell you when it is worth pushing back and, where appropriate, whether there is a realistic basis to pursue those costs.
Sometimes the right advice is to spend less on lawyers.
